Lighting Problems Cancel Flights at K-I Sawyer

Flights headed into K-I Sawyer International Airport on Tuesday night were re-routed. The Airport lost use of it's runway lights, forcing to in-bound flights to be re-routed. American Eagle and Delta Airlines Flights were cancelled.

Marquette County Board Approves K-9 Funding

The Marquette City Police Department has $5,000 to add to funding efforts for a new K–9 unit.The Marquette County Board voted unanimously to approve the funding request that will go towards the start up and establishment of a two dog K–9 unit for the city of Marquette. The dogs will be trained in search and rescue but their main purpose will be to combat the growing issue of drug use in the community.

Substance Abuse Coalition

The Marquette County Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Coalition keeps in touch with activities of teens and young adults. Today, the group met to discuss the growing use of prescription drugs and how to get rid of them. Marquette County Health Department health educator Sarah Derwin says students in local high schools are playing a big role in making sure their peers and members of the community know how dangerous those drugs can be.

Wlidcat Wellness Health Fair

Rape aggression defense system and health risk assessments were part of a half-day-long wellness fair at Northern Michigan University. The focus was on healthy living in behavior, attitude and diet. The message was delivered through displays, food samples, screenings, prizes and more.

Cliffs Will Dissolve MI Iron Nuggets Venture

Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. plans to dissolve its Michigan Iron Nuggets Joint Venture with Kobe Steel. The joint venture was originally formed in 2007 to explore the viability of constructing a commercial operation to produce a pig iron substitute using Kobe's ITmk3 technology and Cliffs' iron ore assets.

U.P. State Fair Focus of New Bills

Legislation removing obsolete rules and regulations from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s books was approved today by the Michigan House. State Rep. Ed McBroom sponsored House Bill 5209 in the seven-bill package to rescind the department’s section on operating the Upper Peninsula State Fair.

Information Sought in Mqt. Co B & E

The Marquette County Sheriff's Office is investigating a breaking and entering complaint in Republic Township and is asking for help from the public. It happened between January 6th and the 31st at a camp on Holli Blue Road. The residence was forcefully entered and household items as well as electronics, tools and a 4–10 shot gun were removed.

9 Year Old Recieves Heart Transplant

Just last Thursday we brought you the story of 9 year old Griffin Helsten, an Ishpeming resident suffering from a rare heart condition. And now we have an update as Griffin makes a big stride on the road to recovery. Griffin under went surgery yesterday to receive a new heart.

Police in Menominee are investigating the death of a 30-year-old woman. City police say Amanda Chase was found dead in her apartment on Thursday. An autopsy was performed over the weekend.

Snowmobile-vs.-Police Officer Follow-Up

A Marquette County teenager is still in jail in Schoolcraft County, charged with assault on a police officer. 19–year–old Dawson Gray of Gwinn had another day in court today on charges stemming from a January 21st incident in which he allegedly hit a sheriff's deputy with his snowmobile. Gray faces a variety of charges, including attempting to do bodily harm less than murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Free Ski Helmets at Mont Ripley

Young skiers were treated to a free helmet today at Mont Ripley in Hancock. The helmets were provided through a $3,000 grant to Portage Health and an additional $2,000 from Dr. Craig Coccia of Marquette General Health System's Brain & Spine Center.

Driver Arraigned in Fatal Crash

A Marquette County woman is in jail tonight, after a weekend drunk driving incident that killed one person. 34 year old Amy Lynn Tierrablanca was arraigned February 6 in 96th District Court in Marquette on the charge of 'operating while intoxicated - causing death." Troopers from the Negaunee post of the Michigan State Police say the woman was driving north on County Road 550 in Big Bay around 3 Saturday morning when the accident occurred.
